Wasn’t it awesome how we all came together for one purpose leading up to this election? It showed that despite what some may say, we can change the world when we work together. As you know the work has not ended, it has just begun.
Our president has urged us to continue to come together and change our communities. On February 12, 2009 the NAACP will celebrate it’s 100th anniversary. Celebrate this milestone with the NAACP by getting involved in your local chapter. Share your hopes for the future on the NAACP website. Yes, we have an African American President. Some never thought they would see this happen in their lifetime.
What’s your hope for the next “in my lifetime” event? What’s the next big obstacle that we can overcome together? Post your hope at www.naacp.org

They were just teenagers who wanted a chance at a better education. But in 1959 Norfolk, that was a problem. African-American students weren’t allowed to go to historically white schools.
…Until the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision opened the door for them by strinking down the doctrine of “separate but equal.” But it still took years of legal wrangling before any of the Norfolk 17 set foot into an integrated classroom.
Then they were intimidated, threatened, cursed and subjected to all manner of racial animosity. But the persevered…and ultimately graduated from high school, earning a place at the table of better education for the African-American students who came after.
Fast forward 50 years: for the first time ever, the Norfolk 17 came together as a group at WHRO to share the heartbreaking, heartwarming stories of their experiences during that horrible time in our history.
These stories will make you laugh, cry, shake your head and marvel at the courage and fortitude of these “babies who were denied their teenage years.”
Norfolk 17: Their Story is the latest in a long line of thought-provoking productions from WHOR. The hour-long television documentary will be broadcast on the 50th anniversary of the day the Norfolk 17 shattered the barriers of segregation - Monday, February 2, 2009, at 9 pm (repeating Sunday, February 9th at 4 pm) on WHRO TV15 and HD15.1.

What’s the Word Mean to You? Every other week we will post a scripture and ask what’s the word mean to you?

Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
********
This is one of my favorite scriptures. When I read this I see a person almost giving up. A person that doesn’t have the strength
to continue on (in his own power). And at that very moment the light bulb going off and allowing God to finish what he started.
Not Nicole finishing it but God finishing it. Working a miracle, taking his time, allowing room for error until HE gets HIS masterpiece (you and I)
just the way he wants it.
When we know that it is HE who started it we can feel safe and secure with HIM finishing the work in us.

Where would I be? You know it burns me up when people think they have arrived. They make it to a certain place in life and forget how they got there. They have a better job, bigger car, don’t sleep around anymore, own a few name brand pocketbooks and shoes. WHAT IN THE WORLD???
How many times did the Lord call your name before you answered? I don’t know about you but I know I didn’t answer the first time, nor the second. Not even the third. But HIS grace and mercy was extended to me and I am forever grateful for that.
Why is it so hard for us to extend the same grace and mercy to those around us? Just because you don’t do IT (whatever your IT was) anymore doesn’t give you the right to hold IT against someone that is still in IT. Everyday I hear people talking about someone else’s IT and how “they just need to get it together”. It’s not that easy. Everyday we are at war and most times the fight is within. And the funny part is- we extend grace and mercy to those we don’t even really know but have a real hard time extending it to those closest to us (our families). Those we see everyday and claim we love. Why is that? That’s not “Agape Love”. Love COVERS a multitude of fault. (and we all have them). That means not just one fault, but several, maybe even hundreds.
Charity begins at home. We are so busy doing “busy work “ in church and outside of church and losing our loved ones. They are slowly slipping away each day.
We can’t save the world and lose those closest to us.

Nicole

No silly, this isn’t one of those messages. When I say sex, I am referring to sexual abuse.
Statistics
1 in every 3 females are being abused
1 in every 5 males are being abused
If you were not the one abused, I am sure you know someone that was a victim of sexual abuse. Like domestic violence, sexual abuse does not discriminate. It finds you no matter color, zip code or status.
Radio Show Interview
Last week I caught up with Stephanie L. Jones, author of “The Enemy Between My Legs” and sexual abuse advocate to discuss her book and her mission.
“Although abuse takes place as a physical act on the outside, the emotional and mental scars run deep”

Introducing our brand new section –
What’s the Word Mean to You? Each week we will post a scripture and ask what’s the word mean to you?

Here’s the first scripture.
James 1:2 - 6
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
What’s that scripture mean to you. Share your opinion in our comments section & help us gain a better understanding of the word.
